Jean Shorts Over Tights — The Saint Laurent Way

Few people have a Midas touch when it comes to clothes. The fashion industry is a fickle beast, after all. But, it seems that much of what Hedi Slimane sews turns to runway gold. The spring '15 Saint Laurent show followed suit, sparkling — at times quite literally — under blaring runway lights. 1960s and '70s silhouettes stomped down the runway to breathy music that made it feel like the models were emerging from a smoky club. Except they obviously don't have mascara residue under their eyes; instead, they have the perfect cat eye. And, perfectly structured hats or sequined turbans. And, black biker jackets that could make your heart melt.
One of the styling moments we paused on, however, was the look with jean shorts over tights. It's something we did in our college days but look back on with mixed emotion. Granted, there are right and wrong ways to pull off any item, but this one can go slutty instead of sexy, fast. Still, leave it to Slimane to pull it all together, just like he did with floral dresses and ripped jeans in seasons past. This time, though, he made jeans-over-tights make sense with a quilted-lapel blazer and thin silk neck scarf that gives the entire ensemble attitude instead of question marks. We think the key here is making sure the shorts are long enough and the tights are either opaque or sheer enough to balance out the overall look. And, hey, if you can get your hands on that blazer, too, then the whole thing's a no-brainer.
