The Olsens’ J. C. Penney Collection is Another Underwhelming Foray Into Mass Retailer Collabs

When we heard about power-twins
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
's new upcoming collaboration with J.C. Penney, we were eager to see the (affordable) fruits of their labor, especially considering the deluge of blah-ness we were getting from other tween-targeted designers. But upon viewing the new "Olsenboye" collection, we have to say we're a little disappointed. It seems that when it comes to designing for the mass Juniors market, style and affordability are mutually exclusive—and we were so hoping that the twins could have reversed the trend. Band pins, striped shirts, and graphic tees have 2000 written all over them (seriously, has fashion not changed for middle schoolers in a decade?), but we could probably get into that high-waisted skirt that we hear comes with an attached peplum. And with an official Olsenboye truck roaming the streets of Manhattan today doling out merch along with free cupcakes, we might be persuaded to take a second look. (WWD)
