The Dangerous Lengths Some Models Go To Stay Skinny

While we'd like to think that genes and spin classes are all it takes to get our runway models looking as thin as only runway models can look, unfortunately, it's not always the case. The pressures to conform to the itty-bitty, clothes-hanger silhouette have driven many models to adopt dangerous dieting habits with lifelong consequences. Russian model Kira Dikhtyar told Fox News yesterday that she's been witness to and victim of some horrifying techniques to get her and her fellow 5'8"+ models down to a size zero.
"Packs of cigarettes, daily colonics, laxatives, Phentermine diet pills, Adderal, prescription drugs that suppress the appetite…I've heard stories that some modeling agents encourage girls to do speed and cocaine in order to speed up metabolism and eat less. And, all kinds of injections are becoming more and more popular, from HCG injections that go with at 500-carlorie diet plan to T3 thyroid injections that healthy models inject in an attempt to speed up their thyroid function, which results in a faster metabolism," she said.

Kira rattled off, before adding that she's also seen girls eat cotton balls to curb hunger pangs and submit themselves to hypnosis. With

, the CFDA, and with groups like the Model Alliance pressing for stricter health guidelines, age bans, and creating rules against intra-industry harassment and abuse, we're hoping that the tides will begin to turn (seriously — the day when we can look up on a runway and see how a piece will fit someone who looks more like us than an Avatar will be a good day, indeed).
