We told you NIVEA’s Kiss of Style Design Contest was going to be a tight race. With the chance to design a new cap for the brand's A Kiss of Moisture sticks, a trip to New York Fashion Week 2013, $1,000 American Express gift card toward travel, and a $1,000 shopping spree, how could it not be? And tight it was, with scores of worthy entries from talented amateur (and professional!) designers from all over the country.
But only one design truly stole our hearts and earned this fabulous prize — the colorful, chevron-heavy creation crafted by Melissa Martin of Portland, Maine. We could talk about what really impressed us with this entry, but the response we got from Melissa impressed us just as much, so we thought we'd hand over the mic to this super-stoked young creative and let her tell you all about it. Melissa?

“I can't even tell you how excited I am! I don't think it’s really even hit me, yet. See, I design slippers for Acorn Products, working with textiles, embroidery, applique, fabrics, and kids’ products (I love that last one the most!). This will definitely go in my professional portfolio. I have the first pair of slippers I ever designed on display in my house in a shadow box, so I think we can make room on the shelf for this, too.”
“As for the cap, I always try to keep my designs simple, easy to understand, and modern. I wanted to make something bright that worked with NIVEA's angular, navy logo — something that would stand out on a shelf and be easy to find in your purse (I can never find things in my purse!). So, I went with a versatile, fun, and current zig-zag chevron pattern (my iPhone case is chevron and so is the fabric base of my inspiration board at work). I was inspired by the bold designs, colors, and the geometric prints of Missoni and Diane von Furstenberg — love them!”
“It’s always been a dream of mine to go to a fashion show. Honestly, I didn't think it would ever happen. I want to thank everyone that has made this possible: NIVEA, Refinery29, and everyone that voted for me! I received an amazing amount of support from my friends, family, and people I don't even know. It wouldn't have been possible without the people that believe in me, and I’m so grateful for that and this amazing opportunity.”
And thank you, Melissa. See you at NYFW!
