Empress Of Isn’t Going To Be Your “Female Electronic Musician”

Lorely Rodriguez is not the new Grimes; though, it is easy to see why music critics often brand her as such. Sure, they share the warbling electronics, the bedroom DJ aesthetic, and the dreamy vocals, but watching Rodriguez play live, you can see the frenetic, on-the-edge-of-her-seat energy that calm, collective Claire Boucher does not have. Rodriguez jumps, dances, tweaks her sampler, stomps around — all while letting her classically trained voice soar. The Brooklynite is an anomaly in electronic music, not just for being a woman in a predominantly male world, but a Hispanic woman, too. If you haven't dug into her bloopy version of soul, check out "eoeoeoeoeoeo" or the high-energy love song, "Realize You." She poured electronics all over our pop — and we love it.
