Partners In Business And Life, WeShouldDoItAll’s Designers Talk Denim Theory

Jonathan Jackson and Sarah Nelson

JJ: "Owner/Creative Director of a small design studio in Brooklyn, WeShouldDoItAll (WSDIA)."

SN: "Owner/Creative Director of a small design studio in Brooklyn, WeShouldDoItAll (WSDIA)"

What were your first pair of jeans?
JJ: "Circa 1982, like most, OshKosh B’Gosh…I believe I had their denim overalls first."

SN: "Hand-me-down pink and white striped OshKosh B'Gosh overalls from my sister Lauren, when I was about four."

What are you wearing?
First look, JJ: "One of my favorite shirts, a denim shirt by Reiss, denim pants by Earnest Sewn, and Nike Toki Canvas Royal Blue shoes."

First Look, SN: "Comptoir de Cotonierres jeans and top, and No. 6 clog sandals. The Comptoir jeans are transformative; they hug and lift in all the right places!"

Second look, JJ: "Jacket from Reiss…this is my other favorite shirt, a dark-denim shirt by Reiss, Stanton 484 Slim Fit pants, and the shoes are from a Swedish label, Whyred. Being comfortable is most important for me. Honestly, 80 to 90% of my clothes are from Reiss. It’s my favorite shop and it would’ve been difficult to have chosen something not from them."

Second look, SN: "American Apparel jeans, Reiss top, and Rachel Comey boots. These red jeans can take a casual look to another level."

How many pairs of jeans do you own?
JJ: "Five or six pairs…not a huge collector by any means."

SN: "Oh wow, too many I suppose. Probably about 10."

Do you have a preferred philosophy when it comes to jeans: Sexy and skinny, or loose and comfy?
JJ: "Loose and comfy."

SN: "Both! Depends on the day."

Used or new?
JJ: "New."
SN: "Mostly new, some hand-me-downs."

What's your signature wash...or does it matter?
JJ: "Don’t have a signature wash, I need more diversity in my collection, though. Black or gray will be next!"

SN: "No signature wash. I’m trying to incorporate more color into my life — I was strictly a black/white/gray girl for way too long!"

What's your favorite way to wear your jeans and with what?
JJ: "Simple, clean…rolled up at the bottom to show a peek of the interior."

SN: "Barefoot with just a tank."

If your jeans had a name or theme song, what would it be? Or do they?
JJ: "Oh, yeah! Freeway’s 'What We Do,' appropriate for walking the Bushwick streets."

SN: "Haha, never thought about it... Maybe Elastica’s 'Connection.' Still badass all these years later."

Favorite example of celebrity-jean wearing (i.e., Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA album cover).
JJ: "What is a celebrity?"
SN: "That’s tough. Tori Amos in ’92 on her Little Earthquakes cover? So understated, quirky, sexy."

What do you love most about your favorite denim pieces?
JJ: "I feel like those shirts were made for me. The fits are great. I love the detailing in patterns, stitching, and buttons."

SN: "Like I said, the perfect fit. It’s like getting a constant hug!"
