The Latest Lorde Video Is Sending Us All Sorts Of Mixed Signals

Remember last week when we got all hyped up about the latest track featuring Lorde, "Magnets"? Well, the video is out. And it is...something. Thematically, the song is in the same ballpark as Taylor Swift's "Wildest Dreams." But, you know, more graphic and way darker, because this is not Taylor Swift. The plot centers on a forbidden romance with a dude who seems like a cad and a half. Lorde makes out with him a lot, and it's relatively awkward because, well, awkward is kind of her thing. Though we'd be remiss not to point out that her styling is gorgeous in this video. Don't get us wrong: It's all pretty sexy. It's just that Lorde is clearly the other woman in an affair with a much, much older married dude who has a giant house in what appear to be the Hollywood Hills.
Although the story line supposedly shifts about midway through: According to Lorde's Tumblr, the video changes from an "affair narrative" to "dude's girlfriend hired miss ella [sic] the hit girl to 'seduce' him then take him the FUCK out." We missed that the first three times around, but maybe you can spot it. Cliché? Yes. A little gross? Maybe. Does she murder him at the end? Watch and decide for yourself. Our minds are boggled by this one.
Editors note: This post has been amended to include Lorde's explanation of the video's plot, as written on her Tumblr page.
