There are certain beauty standbys you can always expect on a Met Gala red carpet. Red lipstick? Check. Cat-eyes? Absolutely. Crimson nail polish? You got it. It's pretty well-worn territory, all in all. But tonight, the attendees actually branched out a bit.

There were definitely some classic looks, but there was so much more: Stars like Janelle Monae, Cara Delevingne, and Rihanna played with braids, brows, and tattoos — and they made it all look good. Ahead, see our favorite looks of the night.

Rihanna pulled out her divisive flat eyebrows for the Met Gala — and they're still totally working. She paired her fairly toned-down makeup with red hair styled with a hair flip — Florence Henderson would be proud. The whole look just worked, and was the perfect complement to her dramatic gown.

Alicia Keys went for the ubiquitous cat-eye, but gave it a little twist by painting it in navy. For her hair, she chose a rope braid that was twisted around itself and secured with a sparkling pin.

We let out a round of applause when Miley stepped out onto the red carpet. The singer slicked down her strands, which were dyed into an icy blue hue. She kept her makeup very simple — a touch of eyeliner and a bit of gloss were all she really needed.

Sure, Cara Delevingne had a killer smoky eye. But, the real story was those incredible tattoos sprinkled up her arms and around her neck. The flowers, from where we're standing, were plum blossoms — which were on-point, given the theme.

Katie Holmes chopped off her hair, and her blunt fringe and razored edges were sleek and edgy, which paired nicely with her classic makeup.

We almost didn't recognize FKA Twigs. Instead of her typical over-the-top look, Twigs kept things seriously stripped down. Her hair, on the other hand, was structural and edgy — a twisted bun on the crown of her head.

Claire Danes opted for a bold plum lip to set off her emerald green dress. Her hair was tousled and shiny. For that undone look, hairstylist Peter Butler sprayed Leonor Greyl Sérum de Soie Sublimateur from root to tip.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen opted for easy, breezy hairstyles. Mary-Kate twisted two low braids, while Ashley chose a high half-topknot. Together, they looked completely stunning, but not overdone.

Adriana Lima's look was full goth for the Met Gala. Her blunt bangs drew attention to her silver-streaked shadow and bold, oxblood lip.

Instead of a conventional cat-eye, Behati Prinsloo opted for a chunkier, squared-off version. It was the cornerstone of her entire look — everything else was kept natural, and her hair was slicked down away from her face.

Don't worry — Katy Perry didn't change her hair again. The singer went for a black pixie on the red carpet, courtesy of a wig. Her inky manicure was accented with tiny, dangling charms.

Holy braid, Janelle Monae. Really, is there anything else to say here? We are in love.

Met Gala co-host Jennifer Lawrence went uncharacteristically bright and poppy for the event. Barbie-pink lips and a tousled high bun were seriously girly, and spring-perfect.

Kendall Jenner didn't decide on her hair until hours before the gala. She was unsure "as to whether or not she wanted it up in a messy pony or down," says hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons. To keep this difficult style smooth all night, Fitzsimons piled on a heavy dose of Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray. "I find that when you're dealing with a style like this, it's best to put a lot of product in the hair," he says.

Karlie Kloss opted for loads of curls and an emerald green cat-eye flick, which makeup artist Sir John created by using L'Oreal Paris Silkissime Eyeliner by Infallible in Green Ivy.

Emily Blunt was striking with a high-volume updo. To get that height, stylist Laini Reeves used Davines Essential VOLU Hair Mist to really amp up her crown. Paired with a pearlized red lip, the result was both classic and gorgeous.

One of the more colorful eye looks of the evening belonged to Joan Smalls, whose smoky eye was a mix of bright pinks and purples. The rest of her look was minimal — clean skin and a simple, sleek blowout.

Even Madonna opted for a toned-down look on the red carpet. The real story was her down-to-here blonde waves, accentuated by super-dark roots.

Dakota Johnson may look like she's wearing a pink lip color, but makeup artist Pati Dubroff says it's just her own lip shade — but better. "She has a beautiful natural lip tone, so we intensified it a little bit," Dubroff says. For her eyes, Dubroff used NARS's Eyeliner Stylo in black — and actually used a ruler to make sure the edges were straight. To keep her limbs looking perfect, Dubroff applied Sisley Anti-Aging Concentrate Firming Body Lotion.

Gigi Hadid's look could be summed up in two words: simple and elegant. "Since her dress was red, we wanted to play off the color and give her a pop on her cheeks," makeup artist Patrick Ta says. To get it, he mixed two shades of Maybelline Fit Me Blush in Medium Pink and Coral. He paired that with a nude lip and loads of black liner. For her hair, stylist Jennifer Yepez for Moroccanoil styled some soft, dreamy waves.
