The McQueen Gala Was Like The Goth Prom

If the Oscars bring out a star's inner prim Grace Kelly, an Alexander McQueen exhibition is a free pass to let her freak flag fly. That sense of irrepressible creative license and dark drama were hallmarks of the late British designer's career, and are celebrated in the retrospective Savage Beauty, which debuted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, and opens tomorrow at London's Victoria and Albert Museum. The celebrities who attended last night's opening gala clearly took McQueen's legacy to heart.
In a crowd comprising McQueen muses past — like Kate Moss and Stella Tennant — and women like FKA Twigs who embody his radical spirit, the level of risks and rewards were way higher than on your average red carpet. It probably helped that so many attendees wore McQueen's own designs, lending the event the feeling of a particularly high-fashion goth prom.
