Noted cat dad Karl Lagerfeld can always be relied upon to give a good quote. This makes reading his interviews fascinating whether or not you care one whit about his latest Fendi collection (inspired by the architecture at the brand's headquarters), or his latest cheeky re-appropriation of signature pieces at Chanel.
An interview in Tuesday's New York Times referred to Lagerfeld's penchant for "Delphic pronouncements" — and indeed, the piece is bubbling over with them. Herewith, some of the best revelations from the latest Book of Karl:
1. Lagerfeld calls faux fur "funny fur." No doubt solidifying PETA's love for him.
2. Famed bandage-dress designer Hervé Léger began life as Hervé Peugnet — a surname Lagerfeld deemed "too heavy." So, Lagerfeld re-named him Léger: French for "light."
3. He is untroubled by the possibility that, in his decades-long career, he may repeat his own ideas: "[Sometimes] people tell me, 'You did that 20 or 30 years ago.' Maybe — I forgot."
4. He doesn't want to be in your selfie, but he won't tell you himself: "[T]hey all want to do selfies with me. No, no, no. Thank god, Sébastien, my assistant, he’s mean to the people in the street, mean and rude. I’m a nice person."
5. He's cool with having mostly bad ideas: "I work a lot for the garbage can. I have huge bins next [to me], for whatever I do, 95% goes to the bin."
6. He prefers to work with women: “I’m not crazy to discuss fashion with men. I couldn’t care less about their opinion.”
