Transparent Creator Dedicates Golden Globe To Leelah Alcorn

Jill Soloway, the creator of the Amazon original series Transparency, made history tonight winning the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series — Amazon's first award win. Soloway dedicated the award to Leelah Alcorn and the trans* community. On December 28, 17-year-old trans* teen Alcorn committed suicide, citing parental disapproval of her trans* identity and a general feeling of ostracization. Her story has moved many people, bringing attention to the number of trans* who commit suicide each year.
In Soloway's acceptance speech, she said she wanted the show to teach its audience about "truth, authenticity, and love." Jeffrey Tambor, the star of Transparent, also took home an award for his role in the series. Though he didn't call out Alcorn specifically like Soloway, he did acknowledge the trans* community. To them he said, "Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your inspiration. Thank you for your patience. And thank you for letting us be part of the change."
Both were touching speeches. But, they were ironically undercut by one NBC afffiiate's coverage of Austrian artist and Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst's red carpet arrival. A tweet from @NBCConnecticut read "Did you see this at the #GoldenGlobes tonight?" along with an image of Wurst—who was looking fabulous in a green and cream gown. The story linked to in the tweet went on to say: "The "Woman Who Worked a Serious Beard During the Golden Globes Red Carpet" and "Forget about the gowns and all the fabulous bling. Let's talk about the facial hair!" Way to miss the point. While Soloway was making a speech about the way transphobia causes serious harm, NBC Connecticut was basically proving her point.
