After a summer of neon makeup and pastel hair, we're looking forward to pulling out our deeper hues for fall. And, lucky for us, there's a whole new way to wear some of autumn's best shades. Case in point: Hailee Steinfeld's gorgeous eye makeup at the Toronto Film Festival this week. Her makeup artist, Nick Barose, swept a burgundy shade over her eyes — a hue that's typically reserved for lipsticks.
"I wanted to play up the flowers and polka dots on her Dolce & Gabbana gown," he said. "The burgundy we used is closer to brown, but less dark than your usual black. Plus, black smoky eyes are so played out by the Kardashians and Jenners, no?" For the shadow, Barose used Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Eyeshadow Palette in Currant Desire.

"I basically just smudged the color around the eyes using a sponge-tip applicator and eye brush. Add two coats of mascara, and that's it," he said.
What makes burgundy so clutch is its subtle spunk. "The red undertone in it is a little badass," Barose says. "You can look edgy, but still pretty, and the color isn't too out there." He claims you can either pair the eye with a strawberry lip (like he did on Hailee), a nude lip for a sophisticated turn, or a pink gloss for a touch of sweetness. This may be the most versatile smoky eye we've encountered in a while. Burgundy...who knew?
