An extremely helpful guide on the appropriateness of catcalling has emerged from the unlikeliest of sources. Playboy published this tongue-in-cheek infographic that drops some helpful knowledge about whistling at people on the street.
"Is that booty bangin'?" Playboy asks. "It's more of a light knock on a door that isn't mine to open," is one of the humorous options on the flowchart. If you choose said fork in the road (hopefully not the one less-traveled), you are directly led to "Nope. Don't do it."
Long story short: Unless you're talking about an actual cat or have "both consensually agreed to shout sexually suggestive comments to each other in public," you should not be shouting inappropriate or lewd things at people in public.
