Elaine Stritch passed away Thursday morning. And, when the news broke, you could practically hear the pangs of grief echo through New York. Few people wind up so inextricably linked to a city, yet Stritch was at the heart of ours. She lived in the Carlyle Hotel, for crying out loud.
Though an Emmy-winning actress, she cannot be defined by a single role, nor even a series of great roles. That's because there was no greater character than Stritch herself. Her one-liners and blunt personality were so radioactive, even the greatest comedy writer couldn't have made them up.
