The Plus-Size Collab We've Waited For

Peter Pilotto for Target. Isabel Marant for H&M. Christopher Kane for Topshop. Prabal Gurung for J.Crew. While all of these designer collaborations offered freak-out-worthy designs, not one of them ventured into sizes above a 14. But, for once, full-figured women are the ones lucking out thanks to Isabel Toledo's capsule collection for Lane Bryant.
Filled with super-feminine, sultry-yet-work-appropriate styles, Toledo's collection conjures a dreamy, urban-ballerina-esque aura that's sure to impress even the most hard-nosed, plus-size fashion critic. While we're chomping at the bit to get our hands on (and curves into) the designs, we're mostly struck by what this collaboration could signify for the fate of the fashion industry.

If Toledo's collaboration with Lane Bryant goes well, then there's a much brighter sartorial future for plus-size women. With the potential success of the collection comes even more proof of what we, and every other plus-size woman out there, have claimed — that we want beautiful clothes, too, and we are not hindered by our size or shape. Perhaps if other designers see the profit this collection will yield, they, too, will want to collaborate with plus-size brands or even expand their own size range to offer a more inclusive spectrum.
With these thoughts in mind, we sat down with Toledo to get her feelings about taking on such a momentous task. Click on to see images from the lookbook, and read our Q&A with the designer. Make sure to view the runway shots featuring all 54 stunning looks.

What made you decide to work with Lane Bryant?
"I love that Lane Bryant loves their customer enough to give her a variety [of] fashion choices. They understand fashion and a woman’s desire to build a great wardrobe, to dress chic at any time, for any occasion. That thinking makes us a great fit."

What was your inspiration behind this collection?
"I wanted to make versatile clothes that can empower a woman, clothes that can be worn together for a very polished and put-together look or taken apart and worn with other pieces you already own: a great top with your favorite jeans, a lace dress under your denim jacket. It's about creating fashion that can last and hopefully become your new best friends."

What are your feelings about the options that are available to plus-size women?
"I think the choices are really great. I see so many chic women of all ages and sizes put together gorgeously. But, no matter what size you may be, I think we women can never have enough choices. For me, that’s what fashion is really all about — options for as many types of women and lifestyles as you can handle. Modern fashion is about expressing yourself; it is about creating your own individual look. You are your own best stylist in the end — we fashion designers can only offer new design suggestions, but real women set fashion in motion. They invent style on a daily basis. Fashion is a living culture."

Do you plan to offer plus sizes in your own collection from now on?
"My clients have always ranged from size 2 to well beyond the ready-to-wear sizes found on a rack. No two women's bodies are ever alike. I have been blessed to dress so many different body types during my 30-plus years in fashion, and, for me, fashion starts with [a] woman's anatomy. A certain body type can trigger an entirely new silhouette or a whole new mood in fashion, a new way of wearing clothes, a new sense of proportion. This is what moves fashion forward."
