Winona Ryder Wore A $10 Thrift-Store Find To The Oscars

We never get tired of celebs-are-just-like-us stories. And, Winona Ryder once again proves her every-girl status in Red magazine’s April 2014 issue. While most starlets turn to a team of stylists to put together their red-carpet ensembles, Ryder likes to keep things a bit more simple. In the exclusive interview with Red, the cover star revealed that she wore a thrift-store find to the Academy Awards.
“Most of my wardrobe is vintage and I’ve worn dresses to the Oscars that I got for $10," she says. “At Sean Penn’s last Haiti gala I wore this vintage dress that I’d worn to a film premiere in 2005. I know that’s kind of a no-no in the fashion world, but why wear something just once if you love it?”
The Reality Bites star and '90s icon is equally candid about growing older. After the meteoritic rise to fame and fortune in her twenties, her thirties were a whole different ball game. And now, in her early forties, she's glad to be out of the game altogether.
“It’s so liberating when you get over that anxious feeling you constantly have when you’re younger. I was about 38 when it happened,” she says. “You watch younger friends go through it, and there’s nothing you can do. It’s like when someone’s in a bad relationship, and you know there’s nothing you can say that’s going to make them leave, but they’ll get there on their own. I’ve been there. We’ve all been there. You’re not ready until you’re ready. Now, I take a role if it really grabs me. I don’t think about a good career move or the strategic thing to do.”
At 42, Ryder has found a new level of happiness with boyfriend, Scott Mackinlay Hahn, CEO of ethical fashion brand Loomstate, a career that’s ticking along nicely, and a landlady named Helen Mirren. Yes, the Helen Mirren.
"She and Taylor Hackford have this mansion, and I rent a little cottage in the back. If I’m having a problem with the house, she’ll come up and fix it," Ryder explains. "She is everything you would hope she’d be: wonderful, warm and funny. I had to tell her I love Prime Suspect so much that, for 10 years, I stayed in hotels under the name DCI Jane Tennison!”
