Whether the Bey/Miley feud is real (unlikely) or just a matter of journalistic error (super likely), the revelation that Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" may have been penned for Beyoncé is fairly timely.
As we read on StyleCaster, Radar reports that representatives for co-songwriter Sacha Skarbek say that, yes, Beyoncé was the original intended artist for the tune. “Originally, the [songwriting session between Dr. Luke and Skarbek] was booked to write a song for Beyoncé,” the comment says. But, the writers soon realized it was not a good fit. Why not? Too much angst? Too little glam? We may never know. Personally, we're glad — it's the one Miley Cyrus song that endures endless listens and begat this.
Now, this is by no means a strike against Mrs. Carter, Cyrus, or the songwriting team that created it. In the A-list publishing game, tunes are written for artists, rewritten, repositioned, or shopped around all the time until they find the right voice to bring them to life. Indeed, the fact that TLC turned down "Baby One More Time" before it became a hit for Britney Spears is both an infamous and illuminating example of the practice — it wasn't right for T-Boz and co., but it made Spears' career.
Nonetheless, this washes away all that talk of how "Wrecking Ball" was a sort of polemic on Cyrus' broken relationship with former fiancé Liam Hemsworth (sorry, Smilers). Finally, if you're not imagining what "Wrecking Ball" would sound like coming out of Beyoncé's pipes right now, well, then you just have no sense of fun whatsoever, do you? (StyleCaster)
