Although Trails Café has been featured in countless tourism guides, there's still that sense of discovery every time we find ourselves ordering the avocado sandwich. The cozy cabin, nestled near Fern Dell in Griffith Park, is an oasis of sorts for both hikers in need of a post-trek meal and locals with a hankering for the popular egg-in-a-basket (just try it). Of course, the groups that form in front of the cash register will quickly remind customers that this is in fact L.A., and that patience is always a virtue.
But, if we were to let anyone cut in line, it's Todd Selby. The photographer and book author turned his lens on the pastry chef Jenny Park, and even documented her crew as they went about preparing a day's worth of dishes. Naturally, we were intrigued by the prep process of the infamous Snakedog (all-beef hotdog wrapped in phyllo pastry, served up on a stick) and adored witnessing one of Park's pies being made from scratch. But, in true Selby form, it's the tailored questionnaire that had us fall in love with Trails Café all over again.
