14 Legitimately Funny Christmas Movies To Stream When Holidaying Gets Too Stressful

Fifteen years ago, if you wanted to watch a holiday movie, you had to go to a video store, watch a VHS or DVD that you already owned, or wait until a Christmas movie just... appeared on TV. But now? We've got the internet and about a million streaming services... and a million movie choices. And if you’re looking for something to watch and have managed to narrow your craving down to a funny Christmas movie, we've got a few suggestions. You'll still have to figure out which funny Christmas movie to watch, but that's on you.

The movies included here range from kids’ movies to rom-coms, from new picks (hello, Anna Kendrick's Noelle!) to classics (Love Actually, ofc), and from the intentionally funny to the intentionally made to seem unintentionally funny. (I think. It’s hard to tell with A Christmas Prince.)

Anyway, there’s a variety to choose from whether you’re feeling nostalgic, watching with younger relatives, or need some time alone to sing “I feel it in my fingers/I feel it in my tooooes.”

Click through for the best funny Christmas movies that are available to stream or rent right now.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you subscribe to something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

The Christmas Wedding Planer

Where to begin with The Christmas Wedding Planner? This movie is not intentionally a comedy except for a few cliched jokes, but boy is it funny. I don't want to say any spoilers, but here are a few of my favorite elements: It stars Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford), NSYNC's Joey Fatone, has two weddings, two private investigators, and a string of deceased parents inspiring their children to find the Christmas spirit.

Bridget Jones’s Diary

Is Bridget Jones’s Diary really a Christmas movie? That’s a personal choice that everyone can make on their own. But, the arguments are out there, and it is funny, so it counts. If you are in the mood for some more Christmas in your Christmas movie, plenty more options are coming for you.

A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince is a Netflix Original from 2017 about an American journalist, Amber (Rose McIver), who is sent to cover the royal family of “Aldovia” and chooses to do so undercover. Of course, while working under an assumed identity, she falls in love with a prince (Ben Lamb). At Christmastime. A Christmas Prince. You get it. The movie is funny in a way that seems like it’s mocking Hallmark Christmas movies, but also still maybe a little unintentionally funny.

A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding

Yep, there’s a Christmas Prince sequel. A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding really capitalized on the royal fever surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and shows Amber’s struggle to plan her wedding and fit into the royal family.

A Christmas Story

This Christmas classic is about a little kid named Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) and everything he experiences during one holiday season, including, memorably, another kid getting his tongue stuck to an ice cold flagpole.

Elf stars Will Ferrell as a human who is raised at the North Pole as an elf, but, upon finding out his true identity, goes to New York City to find his birth father (James Caan). And, you know, there are a bunch of mix-ups because he’s an adult dude dressed as an elf.

The Holiday

At Christmastime, a rich Los Angeles woman (Cameron Diaz) switches homes with an English woman (Kate Winslet), who owns a quaint cottage, and they meet men from each other’s lives (Jack Black, Jude Law) and fall in love with them. Naturally, it will make you wish you were in an LA mansion and in a small English countryside home.

Love Actually

Love Actually shows a variety of people falling in and out of various types of love in the lead-up to Christmas. It all culminates with a play that features both Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and a Christmas octopus. No other movie has that!

Noelle is a new original film for Disney+ that starts Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader as Santa’s children, Noelle and Nick. Nick is set to become the new Santa, but he’s not that into it. As you can imagine, there is someone (whose name is in the title of the movie…) more suited for the role.

The Princess Switch

Like A Christmas Prince, Netflix’s The Princess Switch is a cheesy movie about Christmas and royals. This one is about an American baker (Vanessa Hudgens), who happens to look exactly like a duchess (Vanessa Hudgens), who is about to marry into the royal family of Belgravia (see: a very made-up country). You won’t believe this, but they switch places.
