What Is The Original Cast Of Hamilton Up To Now?

If you weren't lucky enough to make it to Broadway before the curtain closed on Hamilton's original cast, don't worry: Disney+ has the movie equivalent of a time machine back to 2015. At long last, fans will be able to watch Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom, Jr., and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda star in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical — and, best of all, fast-forward through intermission.

The Hamilton film was initially set for a 2021 theatrical release, but will now be available to stream July 3. In a statement, Miranda said he was "grateful" that Disney and Disney+ decided to drop the movie just in time for this year's Fourth of July weekend and "in light of the world turning upside down." Broadway is one of the many industries that has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic: in March, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that all performances would be cancelled, meaning Hamilton won't return until early next year at the soonest.

You won't be able to watch the actors from the Disney+ recording onstage, though: the last of the OG cast left the musical in 2016. Today, some Hamilton alums are focusing on film and TV; others are releasing solo albums, and two are even engaged. Lin-Manuel Miranda (Who Plays Alexander Hamilton)

What he was doing before Hamilton: Miranda is best known for writing, composing, and starring in Hamilton, but his other wildly successful musical, In the Heights, came first. In the Heights opened off-Broadway in 2007 before debuting on Broadway a year later, with Miranda starring as Usnavi up until 2011. With a Tony and a Grammy under his belt, he started working on what would eventually become Hamilton in 2008.

What he's doing now: After Hamilton took off, Miranda wrote and performed music for Disney's Moana and the forthcoming live-action Little Mermaid. He's also stayed busy with the upcoming In the Heights film adaptation — although he won't reprise his role, he does play a smaller part, and also serves as a producer. Thanks to COVID-19, the film's release was pushed to 2021.

Daveed Diggs (Who Plays Marquis de Lafayette & Thomas Jefferson)

What he was doing before Hamilton: Hamilton was Diggs' Broadway debut, but he came to the musical with several regional theater credits. He's also been a part of experimental rap trio Clipping since 2010, and continues to put out music with the group today.

What he's doing now: Diggs currently stars on TNT's Snowpiercer, and will play Frederick Douglass in the upcoming mini-series The Good Lord Bird. He'll also once again join forces with Miranda for Disney's live-action Little Mermaid, voicing Sebastian (and maybe even singing one of Miranda's songs?).

Christopher Jackson (Who Plays George Washington)

What he was doing before Hamilton: Like some of his cast mates, Jackson was a seasoned Broadway performer by the time he came to Hamilton. His prior credits included The Lion King, Memphis, and Miranda's own In the Heights.

What he's doing now:
Last year, you might have seen Jackson in the CBS show Bull and Ava DuVernay's When They See Us. He's currently hard at work on an album, which will be his first solo record in nearly a decade, according to Billboard.

Jonathan Groff (Who Plays King George)

What he was doing before Hamilton: Before Hamilton, Groff was probably best known for portraying Jesse St. James, Rachel's (Lea Michele) on-off love interest, on Glee. He also famously voiced the character of Kristoff in Frozen. In the theater world, Groff made a name for himself originating the role of Melchior in Spring Awakening.

What he's doing now: Up until the start of this year, Groff starred as Seymour in an off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors. He also reprised his Frozen role in 2019's Frozen 2, and he'll appear in the upcoming Disney+ documentary series Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2.
