Photographed by Ben Sklar. Uneven hemlines are usually a fashion no-go, unless there's an expert asymmetrical detail that looks way purposeful. True, we've seen highs and lows enter the collective sartorial consciousness on more than one occasion. More successfully with, say, the high-slit dress than the once-favored mullet skirt. But, for spring '15, Phillip Lim has completely reimagined the hemline yet again.
The 3.1 collection premiered with a theme of rolling waved edges, featuring peplums and dress bottoms that are thickly stitched and longer in some places than others. Corners curled up like those of burnt treasure maps, but maps that had been swathed in luxurious textiles and a patchwork of rich prints. It is a genius way to look finished and unfinished with just one stand-out garment. And, the type of thing that fast fashion will adopt and disseminate to the street-style circuit in the next few months. It is, in essence, the treasure itself.
