The Detail You DEFINITELY Missed On Rihanna Last Night

Some iconic Comme des Garçons designs are meant to hide away hands and arms, wrapping them in a cocoon-like fashion. So given this year’s Met Gala theme, attendees had a strong case for skipping a manicure altogether. Many went minimal. “If anything surprised me it was that everyone wanted very minimalist, understated nails! But I love what each woman chose, they looked very chic,” says Eichi Matsunaga, a Tokyo-based manicurist who created his first Met Gala designs for Mindy Kaling, Nicki Minaj, Mandy Moore and others. (Keep an eye out for Matsunaga — he’s about to be big with the Hollywood crowd.) Though many stars choose neutral nail looks to go with intricate statement dresses, a handful piled on the drama, thanks to bold manicures emblazoned with jewels, prints, and geometric designs.
Katy Perry, who wore one of the strongest sartorial looks of the night, not only matched her nails to her blood-red ensemble, she also duplicated its jewel-encrusted texture, too. Ashley Graham donned an abstract design and Rihanna donned a baroque version of a classic French mani. Even neutral shades were picked to pop against gowns. See how the night’s most daring manis stood out in a sea of mind-bending fashion, ahead.

To land on a nail look as strong and vivacious as her flamenco-inspired dress, Rihanna worked with longtime collaborator and celebrity manicurist Maria Salandra. Long, almond-shape nails were coated with Robin’s egg blue polish (Red Carpet Manicure Gel in Insta Famous). Next, nails were topped with deep-set French tips made of a gold-foiled damask pattern that looks right at home next to her hand tattoos.

This subtle lace-top design, created by celebrity manicurist Elle Gerstein, riffs on Chrissy Teigen’s feathered gown. And it was creating using just one color: The nail pro used Essie Nail Polish in Liquorice two ways to create a dual-finish design. The color was thinned out with several drops of a top coat before being painted onto her nail, then used straight as an overlay when painting the lacey motif.

Kiko Mizuhara

Matsunaga and Mizuhara dreamt up her nail design the night before the big event. “Last night we walked around the city and talked through different ideas for her nails,” he shares. “In the end, we were inspired by our imaginations as well as our excitement about being in New York City.”

Mizuhara added a border of teeny Swarovski crystals to custom made, one-of-a-kind clear press-on tips. The glam-meets minimalist design allows Kiko’s natural nails to show through. “It's an untraditional element, so it's a bit of a surprise, like many of Kawakubo's designs,” he says.

Graphic, geometric shapes served as inspiration for this manicure made in homage to Rei Kawakubo. “I used a neutral gel base color and then hand-painted irregular geometric outlines in black to give her a deconstructed, patchwork vibe,” Matsunaga says.

Katy Perry

The singer’s wool coat and tulle-and-silk chiffon dress (by John Galliano for Maison Margiela) recalled the crimson-filled Blood and Roses collection that Rei Kawakubo debuted for Spring/Summer 2015. For last night’s affair, Perry’s nails were painted the same bright red shade — and given the bejeweled texture of her coat. Medium-length, square cut nails featured evil eyes and blingy baguettes among other 3D designs.

Ashley Graham

“Her dress was deconstructed at the shoulder and on the bottom and she had a matching clutch, which totally inspired me to recreate that shape on the outside of her dress,” explains manicurist Mar y Sol Inzerillo of Ashley Graham's look. After laying down a coat of OPI Infinite Shine in Samoan Sand, the nail pro used OPI Infinite Shine in Malaga Wine to create the wavy nail art on each finger.
