If it weren't for cashmere sweaters and ultra-cute pom-pom beanies, surviving the harsh winter would be an impossible feat. Think a pricey trip to the dry-cleaner is the only way to care for cold weather favorites? No, says The Laundress. With their bestselling product, the Wool & Cashmere Shampoo, you can hand-wash woolens at home. Read on to find out how, and then enter the contest below to WIN everything you need to repeat this process at home!
Despite care labels that advise "dry clean only," wool and cashmere can and SHOULD be washed! The Laundress co-founders Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd share their expert How-Tos on safely, yet effectively, cleaning woolens. It's less expensive, eco-friendly, and the results are awe-inducing!

Pretreat target areas like underarms, collars, and cuffs with a stain remover. For set-in stains, soak in cool/tepid water for up to 30 minutes.

Hand-washing is the safest way to care for woolens. Fill a basin or sink with cool/tepid water and add one squirt of The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. Turn the item inside out and submerge. Gently stir the water and soak for up to 30 minutes. Note: If you see color in the water, don't panic. This is normal and it is simply the dye's fabric releasing color. Your item will not appear faded.

Run lukewarm water through the item until the rinse water is no longer soapy. Press out excess water.

Lay item flat in its natural shape on a drying rack or towel. Never put woolens in the dryer!

Inspired to clean green with this newly acquired knowledge? The Laundress has partnered with Refinery29 to give away $500 toward the brand's eco-friendly line of detergent, fabric care, and home cleaning products! Simply enter your email below for your chance to win.
