“Kaputt,” the title track from
new record, is the centerpiece for what may be one of the strangest concept albums in recent memory. The whole experience feels as if David Bowie circa 1984 made an album about David Bowie circa 1976, at the height of his cocaine-saturated Thin White Duke phase. There are a couple of reasons why this makes sense beyond the record's immediate sonic pastiche, which is far different from anything Dan Bejar has done with either Destroyer or The New Pornographers. First, because Bejar's vocals sound a hell of a lot like David Bowie’s, and second, Destroyer appear to have kidnapped the saxophonist from Bowie’s much derided 1984 album Tonight and told him to go nuts. The result seems to say that they got through the party alive and now they are going to tell you about it, whether it was last weekend or 35 years ago.
