Perhaps more American than apple pie, the road trip has been a rite of passage probably ever since Ford started manufacturing cars. This summer, instead of planning a typical getaway, why not take to the open road? There is certainly something to be said for the effects of wind in your hair, good girlfriends, cruise control and diner food. The Trip: The Pacific Coast

The Route: From Seattle to San Diego via I-5 South and Highway 1 in California.

The Distance: Approximately 1,200 miles or 20 hours non-stop.
