One Of S.F.’s Coolest Salons…Is For Kids?

Blame it on Bieber (or Harry Styles), but there's definitely something going on in the youngster hair scene…for both girls and boys. And, now there's a cool-kids' salon just for them. Enter Sacramento Street's Prep, an oasis catering to the 2-year-old to 18-year-old set, founded by Jen Dolin Rinehart and Heidi Gregory, moms who met through their sons' preschool days.
"We were consistently having a hard time finding a great place for our kids to get good haircuts. They had outgrown the younger kid places, but were too young to go to our adult salon. They could get a great cut at the adult salon, but we would pay the adult price, and really, the kids were bored there," explain the ladies. "We saw an opportunity to target a niche market that had not been targeted before anywhere in the country."
The pair's master vision came to fruition last November, when they opened up their space, which is filled with natural light, modern furniture, iPads to surf for hair inspiration, an enviable stack of cool fashion magazines (for visiting parents), an in-house hair-care line, and cool art all over the place (we love the Pacman light structure above the shampoo station, and the pieces by local students that sprinkle the other walls).
Ready to bring your favorite kid to get the full Prep experience? Cuts, blowouts, and braids all start at $35, while color streaks and mini-highlights are priced $10 per foil. In the meantime, take a look at the rad space in our slideshow.
Prep, 3235 Sacramento Street (between Presidio Avenue and Lyon Street); 415-763-7737.
