Lupita Nyong'o did not walk away with a Golden Globe this past weekend for 12 Years a Slave. But, we like to think we know a winner when we see one, and judging from her handful of appearances over the past few days, trust: Lupita had no competition.
While the events leading up to the Golden Globes may not have caught the spotlight quite as much as the major awards show itself, they still allowed for multiple appearances from the budding actress, each one completely scene-stealing. Mark down January 11, 2014, because that's the day she killed it in three different looks. At the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards brunch, she dressed in a Peter Pilotto shorts creation. It was strong on the prints and minimal on the accessories, including an Anya Hindmarch clutch — altogether an effortless execution.

Keeping in that statement-making territory, the Hollywood newcomer also wore a Mary Katrantzou dress for her DuJour magazine celebration. Once again, no fancy styling tips, just wild prints.

And, finally, Nyong'o pulled together what was arguably the quietest outfit of the day: a pastel-blue and white, colorblocked Altuzarra dress, accented with a bold heel and sparkling clutch. If there's anything we can learn from 2013's breakout actress, it's that you must choose wisely. While some style stars may be applauded for their ability to piece together designer items — creating more layers than the inside of a wedding cake — Nyong'o relies on one beautiful fit or print that does all the work for her. And, that certainly lets the starlet shine.
