It Was the LES-By-Way-Of-Berlin At Macqua Fall ’09

When we walked into Eyebeam early Thursday afternoon, models were parading down the catwalk already. "Did it start?" One of us whispered to the other. "Hmm, looks like >Alexander Wang to me," the other said. Well, turns out it was just the models doing their pre-show walk-through, which made so much sense considering all MODs dress in Wang anyway. But then the actual clothes came out, and needless to say, all fell into place. Ironically, there were real nuances of Wang, like an asymmetric jersey mini with cut-outs and ruching, as well as slouchy menswear looks like silk pants and sleek tuxedo vests or an oversized blazer with the sleeves rolled up. But Meike Vollmar, the young German designer behind this fresh new line, turned out plenty of pleasant surprises that were unequivocally her own: Light pink tights that looked almost nude, a big weekender bag in lacquered leather, and oversized chunky necklaces or leather wrap bracelets that instantly jazzed up little black dresses. It was the sort of downtown cool uniform that Berlin emigres adopt within one year of living in the city, which we love.
