One could argue that the way we shop is what's changed the most in fashion over the last decade. Starting with just a few e-boutiques, a world of e-commerce sites has blossomed, reaching customers in ways no one could have expected. The shift from brick-and-mortar to click-and-purchase retail has brought new personalities with it. Jane Albiter, senior ready-to-wear buyer at Shopbop, is one of them. (Yes, you can thank Albiter for your online shopping addiction.)
After working in sales at the more traditional Bergdorf Goodman, she switched sides of the biz — a feat in and of itself — by joining the powerhouse e-tailer as a buyer. Luckily, she had the fierce confidence to make that shift, because she's now setting the tone for a new generation of retail buyers, one that serves more customers in more places and caters to their ever-evolving tastes and increasingly more unpredictable demands. It's a new digital world of shopping, and Albiter is running out in front of it — in the latest designer denim and covetable kicks, no less.

How I got my start
“I’ve always loved clothes. Maybe it’s because my mom, sister, and I would go shopping every Sunday. My sister and I were always playing dress-up in her closet! Around 14, I started as a sales rep at a clothing store named Smith Bros. I stayed there for seven years! I spent every paycheck on a new pair of jeans, so not much as has changed.”

The biggest challenge I've ever faced
“The digital world is changing so quickly that I’m not sure I can predict what’s going to happen. It’s just important to stay flexible and nimble. That said, I’d love if the industry were structured in a more buy-now and wear-now time frame. For instance, instead of having fall ship in July, have it arrive in September. It’d be a lot easier for the consumer to understand. More than that, though, to be sure we're giving the Shopbop girl the newest and greatest of what’s out there, I always have to experiment with new designers and trends. For that, I need to trust my gut. You've got to do what you believe in and never be afraid to take risks as long as you stand by them.”

What beauty means to me

“Being confident, funny, and driven. More than that, though, beauty is about accentuating what you have and not trying to be something you’re not.”
