Object Lesson: Final Frame

There's a dark star in Tsubi's Mister sunglasses. By Loryn Hatch
ksubiglasses_objectlesson.jpgAt only 23, designer Graz Mulcahy is already well in the thick of a booming career that began when he left secondary school at 15, started his own design business, and finished his fashion degree all in less than six years. Since then, he's become well-known for his eye-catching work at AM Eyewear, and his recent move to Australian denim favorite, Tsubi. As Tsubi's new eyewear designer, Mulcahy has established a signature collection of sunglasses, bringing a passion for classic and straightforward designs together with innovative materials and the occasional swipe of unexpected color. Our front-runner from his latest collection is the Mister, an '80s-by-way-of-'00s look that hints ever-so-slightly at the old-old-school Ambervision phenomenon.
With beveled, square lenses spaced by a prominent bridge, the Mister glasses create an all-weather shield that won't make you feel like an extra from Chips. Made from Cellulose Acetate, a material much like the stuff used to make records, the frames are soft and bendable, yet still incredibly sturdy. A thin wire across the top of the lenses adds a spot of detail to the otherwise minimal design, which exemplifies Mulcahy's modest approach and his belief that the people behind the glasses are what's important. "I don't have a logo because I don't design glasses for people who need a status boost," he says. "But I do design for rock stars—or people who think they are," he explains. Available in black frames with either black or gold lenses. The Mister sunglasses, $243.
Available at the Tsubi, 219 Mulberry Street, 212-334-4690.
