10 Over-The-Top Celebrity Wedding Proposals

When George Clooney proposed to Amal Alamuddin earlier this year, he did it over a home-cooked meal. Dwyane Wade and Brad Pitt both enlisted their children to help pop the question, while Aaron Paul got engaged to now-wife Lauren Parsekian after dancing with her in a Paris courtyard on New Year's Eve.
And then there are those celebrities for whom dropping the "Will you marry me?" bomb is an opportunity to pull out all the stops. Helicopter rides, fantasy destinations, orchestras, the occasional custom igloo — if they can dream it, they'll do it.
Unfortunately, some of these couples have since split, proving that a lavish proposal doesn't guarantee a happy marriage. Apparently, not even a trip to the Eiffel Tower can make up for a husband who believes that aliens live inside you.

Others, however, are still going strong after their blowout engagements. A hefty ring and a luxury suite exploding with roses may not be the secret to everlasting love, but we won't tell your boyfriend that.

Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan-Tatum

Here's some news that may exacerbate your Chan obsession. The actor proposed to his Step Up costar in September 2008, secretly flying in close friends to Maui to help the happy couple celebrate their engagement. A bit pricey, but maybe not as expensive as the Neil Lane ring he gave her.

Russell Brand & Katy Perry

Did Katy Perry get the idea for "Firework" from her 2010 proposal? The couple was staying at a five-star resort in India for New Year's Eve when Brand surprised the singer with fireworks, which they watched while sitting on an elephant. The evening also included a Cinderella-style horse-and-carriage ride, an al fresco garden dinner, and an engagement ring hidden in some flowers. They returned to India to marry, but divorced in 2012. Still, an A for effort.

Sara Gilbert & Linda Perry

Musician Perry set the scene for true romance this spring when she invited now-wife Gilbert for a picnic in the park. "We go to a park, we have food, and we’re eating it, it’s really sweet and there’s this guy sitting playing guitar, like a street musician,” Gilbert later recounted. “He starts playing this song that we love… I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s so weird, this is so magical and amazing.’ So that ends, and she’s like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna ask him to play this other song,’ but this other song is really obscure and this guy wouldn’t know it, but magically he knows it.' And suddenly, the people picnicking next to us pull out string instruments from under the blanket and walk over and they start playing ‘Love Song’ (by the Cure).”So stealing this one."

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon

What's better than one proposal? Two. In 2008, Cannon treated his leading lady to a romantic dinner on the roof of the singer's Manhattan apartment. Looking out onto the Empire State Building, which had been lit up in pink and purple, he presented Carey with a candy ring pop. Inside was a 17-carat diamond engagement ring. To top it all off, a few days later Cannon took his bride-to-be on a helicopter ride around the city and proposed a second time. Guy is good.

Sienna Miller & Tom Sturridge

A trip to Paris over the 2011 Christmas holidays ended in a proposal for this British couple. Sturridge reportedly filled their suite at the luxury Ritz hotel with flowers and gave his love a vintage Victorian ring. The Burberry campaign stars haven't yet wed, but welcomed daughter Marlowe in 2012.

Heidi Klum & Seal

The marriage didn't last, but the story of this former couple's epic engagement is still impressive. "He had an igloo built there [the Canadian Rockies], and they'd brought up everything: a bed with sheets inside the igloo, rose petals everywhere, candles," Klum said of the 2004 proposal. "Very, very romantic!" No doubt.

Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent

Location, location, location. This just-married couple got engaged on April 8 when Berkus popped the question atop Machu Picchu. Pretty hard to say no.

Kanye West & Kim Kardashian

Prior to Kimye the Wedding, there was Kimye the Proposal, which involved the Chicago Symphony, a Jumbotron pleading, "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!," and a blindfolded Kardashian being escorted onto the field at San Francisco's AT&T Park. Oh, and don't forget the TV crew, who were able to capture the intimate moment for a future episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Gisele Bündchen & Tom Brady

You don't ask the world's biggest supermodel to be your wife without having something really special planned. For Tom Brady, who popped the question in December 2008, that meant filling a private jet with champagne and four-dozen white roses. Touchdown.

Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise

Things started off so well for TomKat. In 2005, Cruise made his couch-jumping devotion official when he proposed to Holmes at the Eiffel Tower. This was swiftly followed by a press conference announcing the engagement — one of many, many awkward things to happen in that relationship.
