In 1935, Paul Sperry saw his cocker spaniel Prince run across a frozen pond near his Connecticut casa and had an "aha" moment. Noticing that the mutt didn't slip, he traced the traction to Prince's cracked and grooved paws, which he ingeniously realized would be perfect traction for us humans, too. The lightbulb translated to the Authentic Original Sperry Top-Sider, and our boat-shoe summers haven't been the same ever since.
