Every time we get word that a new Oreo is coming, we expect it to be a crazy new flavor, often with a nostalgic twist. Which is exactly what we thought was happening when Oreo reached out recently about an upcoming cookie. In fact, after the news about a possible brownie-batter flavor leaked, we were waiting with bated breath. But, instead, team Oreo went totally rogue; rather than coming out with a new flavor, the brand changed the shape of the cookie. That’s right: In addition to the regular Oreos, Double Stuf, Triple Layer, and Mega Stuf (yeah, there are a lot of Oreos out there), the company is debuting Oreo Thins, which feature less creme filling and thinner cookies than the originals. Oreo Thins are 7.5mm thick, while the classics are 12.5mm. At first glance, we thought Oreo was trying to sell us a diet product, which would not have been cool — but an Oreo rep assured us that these are not meant to be a calorie-cutting option. Apparently, the sleeker look is based on a "nod to the 'thin' product cues we see these days in culture and technology," and is meant to "pair well with an afternoon latte, cup of tea, or other 'me time' moment, for a more grown-up treat," according to a press release. Oreo Thins will hit store shelves permanently on July 13 and will come in classic, mint, and golden flavors. While snackers in our office were wary of the thinner cookies at first, we still managed to plow through three boxes of them in practically no time at all. And hey, if you’re a Double Stuf-er for life, you can always use Oreo Thins as tasty poker chips.
