When I was 20, I lived in Rome for a while. I learned quite a bit about what it means to be Italian, and while I could get behind a lot of it — fresh pasta, seasonal produce, pig products for every conceivable taste and occasion — the way the Italians drank really threw me for a loop.
At the time, I was a sophomore at a large, public university in California — an educational experience that, for many people, involves shot after shot (after shot) of vodka, rum, and tequila over the course of a Friday (Tuesday?) evening. Nevertheless, when I saw my Italian friends knocking back seemingly endless quantities of red wine at every meal (and between meals, too), I was a little taken aback. To be honest, I was mostly amazed that they were able to keep their eyes open after drinking what had to have been their eighth glass of vino.
A recent report released by the World Health Organization sheds more light on the myriad ways party people the world over like to guzzle their booze. Among the juicy tidbits: On average, every person over the age of 15 consumes 6.2 liters of pure alcohol every year, which works out to about one drink per day.
Want to see how your drinking habits stack up? The fun-loving programmers over at Time created a pretty handy quiz that matches your drinking habits to the countries with averages that most resemble your responses. Just enter the number of beers/cocktails/glasses of wine you consume per week and hit "Cheers." Apparently, I now drink like...an Albanian? I guess that's better than an L.A. college student.
