Listen To Lorde Fill In For Kurt Cobain At A Nirvana Reunion

It's curious when a teen is called in to honor a band that, speaking for a generation of youths, asked others to entertain them. It's especially interesting when said teen was born years after the band, well, disbanded. But, Lorde's not your average teen, and it seemed just right that she was up on that stage on Thursday night.
She joined the living members of Nirvana, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and St. Vincent to celebrate the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Each artist took a turn filling in for Kurt Cobain and offering their own spin on a Nirvana classic. Lorde, however, didn't cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Joan Jett owned that track, while Lorde did her seance thing to "All Apologies." Kim Gordon took "Aneurysm," and St. Vincent performed "Lithium" for the second time this week (she previously covered it during her Chicago tour stop).

Some might find issue with Lorde, a fresh-to-the-scene artist, sharing the stage with already established and much-celebrated musicians, but it's her very inclusion that signifies she's not just some pop star. She's got influence and an outlook on the world that goes against the mainstream, much like Nirvana did during its heyday. Give her 20 some years, and we have no doubt we'll be seeing her inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, too.
