Beyoncé may have thrown the entire planet a curveball with the release of her eponymous visual album last year, but the latest behind-the-scenes video suggests it was just all part of her master plan.
Jake Nava, Bey’s longtime collaborator and director of many of her most loved music videos ("Single Ladies," anyone?), reveals the punishing schedule the singer put herself through to get the vids for "Partition," "Flawless," and "Grown Woman" off the ground. If you’ve ever Instagrammed the phrase, “What would Beyoncé do?” This sneak peek has the answer. And, suffice to say, it’s rather a lot.
Here are just a few tidbits we've picked up: In "Grown Woman," Beyoncé donned a vintage Tommy Hilfiger tee and Timberland boots to recreate the moves she pulled in her teenage bedroom way back when. In "Flawless" she goes all the way back to the ‘80s club scene. The mood was intentionally wild and spontaneous, as Nava explains, “Sometimes when things are planned, they are less interesting to watch.” The "Partition" video, at least, took enough planning to get Jay Z into Paris on a helicopter so he could shoot his scenes before dashing back to London to resume his tour.

While this four-minute behind the scenes makes it all seem like a breeze, it's still incredible to think that Beyoncé dropped the entire album plus 17 videos without any warning. And, the sheer variety of themes, moods, and styles accomplished is staggering. How does she do it? “No matter what idea I bring to the party,” Nava says, “she steps up with as much, if not more.” See for yourself in the clip below.
