As the first non-Caucasian model to be featured in a major fashion magazine, China Machado has observed the industry's evolution for over eight decades. Today, the former Givenchy muse is nostalgic for the old-school design world. "When I was in Givenchy," she tells tells
British Vogue in a recent interview, "the clothes were made on the models...so we showed them in a different way." Machado has stayed in the ring, though, most recently as the face of Cole Haan's fall campaign.
A 83, she's only two years younger than the company, seems to have endless energy — and has skin to die for. But, lest you think the gorgeous model is superhuman, Machado begs to differ. "I make myself lie down every afternoon; otherwise, I'll be too exhausted by the nighttime...You know, I'm a dinosaur." We can't say we agree with that last statement, but we do appreciate Machado's point: The key to an enduring career is to work hard and take care of yourself.
