How To Get The Black Swan Smoky Eye Without Looking Like A Bird Brain

When the
Black Swan
buzz started, we couldn't help but be dazzled by Natalie Portman's striking, winged eye makeup, goth lips, and porcelain skin. The look is obviously stage-worthy and extreme, making it the perfect teaser to the film's dark and seductive storyline, but does it translate into something wearable? The makeup artists who created Portman's enigmatic look, Margie Durand and Judy Chin (who used MAC for the film), say it's possible. Durand recommends going for a 1920s vamp look: "Create the smoky Black Swan eye with a slender, silver line—over the eyelid, too—that follows the wing shape we created for Portman. Rim the waterline with black liner and top it off with full feathery false lashes. Apply a very matte foundation with contoured cheekbones and a hint of shimmery blush on apples of the cheeks. Lips can be matte or glossy in dark eggplant, wine, or even black." Our take: With this look, experimentation is key so go bold and smoky or keep it simple and clean. Either way, it's seriously en pointe.
