You might already be familiar with exciting publications like femzine and gal-dem but there are a lot more talented women of colour steering the zine scene. New brands are making print publications fun, cool and accessible for so many more people at a time when ethnic minorities are often drowned out in the media. Here, we'll introduce you to some of the gems paving the way for more voices to be heard.
Metaphorically sticking up a middle finger to the same old content, the zine world is looking particularly exciting right now, and image stock company Shutterstock agrees. At the start of the year, the company reported zines would continue to thrive in an era dominated by social media, reporting: "Independent makers can share, and niche groups can discover."
As WOC band together to create the female-led content that is lacking in mainstream media, look forward to an array of publications challenging stereotypes. Is art your thing? Introduce yourself to some BAME artists stealing the limelight. Into fashion? Get inspo from stunning photo series shot in northeast Africa. Get comfy and take a look at just a fraction of the most exciting zines that you'll want to have on your coffee table.
