It's that time of year, folks. It's getting lighter earlier, we're ready to unpack our sandals, and yet we've been hit with another (hopefully final) snowstorm.
While summery midi floral dresses, poplin blouses, and wicker basket bags hold their own, we actually believe the pieces fall and winter bring are far more exciting. Graphic knits, Chelsea boots, newsboy caps, faux fur accessories, velvet finishes — the choices come are endless. But the most exciting, of course, is your winter coat.
It's the piece you wear the most throughout the season (it's still March, and your go-to piece of outerwear is still going strong). But if you're sick of the shape or silhouette you've been bundling up in since November, click through for five styles we're currently coveting, from fuzzy textures to classic trenches.
Faux fur is synonymous with Joan Rivers and Cruella de Vil, Margot Tenenbaum and Penny Lane. What a crowd. Right now, it's more versatile than ever thanks to the likes of UK-based brands Shrimps and Charlotte Simone, but Miu Miu, Anya Hindmarch, and Dries Van Noten all showcased color pop textures for fall. Our favorite cuts have cute little Peter Pan collars (or no collars at all), but either way, the bolder the faux fur, the better. Keep snug and pair yours with cropped denim and zip-up booties.

Padded jackets transitioned from ski enthusiast to streetwear last year, and this season's offering has returned bigger and better. Rihanna led the way with Fenty x Puma floor-skimming checked jackets, Rick Owens went conceptual with larger-than-life pieces, and 3.1 Phillip Lim played with proportion by belting nipped-in waists. There are no rules with this one — printed, colorful, muted, patent, or velvet, there's a quilted jacket for everyone's taste.

You may have noted that every street styler at
Copenhagen Fashion Week
was wearing a checked blazer or coat with their ditsy florals and washed denim. No longer for reserved for private school uniforms, Off-White, Mulberry, and Alexander Wang paraded the traditional gray print down the catwalks, while Marc Jacobs, Pringle of Scotland, and Lacoste presented the silhouette in more autumnal tones. You can also try something with a little more color — like Esteban Cortazar and House of Holland — with pinks, blues, and yellows running through the print. Either way, it's worth investing in something in this timeless pattern.

Is there anything as cool than a patent coat? Equal parts
The Matrix, Blade Runner, and punk, there's something rebellious and futuristic about a high-shine piece. While we invested last year when the hype began, this season has seen shapes evolve: Teatum Jones' navy number was a trench coat hybrid, Au Jour Le Jour went all-out glamour with textured trimmings, and Sonia Rykiel's brown version featured over-the-top pockets. Whether you stick with black or go down a red, blue, or cranberry route, make it slick.

Ah, the trench coat. A mainstay of Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, and Humphrey Bogart, this classic jacket is a perennial transition piece. Pair it with an umbrella and you have one of the most British looks going, but this season, the trench got a contemporary refresh. While fall '17 runways bought us navy versions at APC, denim at Adam Selman, and leather at Lacoste, you don't have to be experimental with fabrics and colors to make the coat relevant. Wear it in classic camels, tans, and sands, but style it with fresh white sneakers, wide-legged trousers, and statement earrings. We'll be living in ours until the frost properly bites.
