"You have your leading lady running all over town wearing a scrunchie!" Carrie Bradshaw once pointed out with frustration to her writer boyfriend, baffled by his choice in accessories. And, were we in her shoes any other day of the week, we'd have Bradshaw's back. But, not today. Not since rag & bone released its pre-fall collection and, with it, brought back a flood of memories ranging from our first dance recital to the last, lingering Lurex scrunchie we toss our locks in when we wash our face, the tie's remaining elasticity about as forgiving as the trend itself.
Yet, one scan through rag & bone's new line and the use of scrunchies was certainly the most surprising aspect. Secured around buns at the top of the head (just where we left 'em in '92), not one but three puffy hair ties were counted, signaling that perhaps the '90s-style moment has not passed. And, playing to the athletic, high-school-gymnasium aesthetic of the new collection — which, for the record, is the perfect mix of function, tailoring, and pretty, lacy detailing — the scrunchies actually make for a surprisingly complementary accompaniment.
While we're glad to take sartorial cues from the menswear-meets-womenswear label, rag & bone is throwing us for a loop with its old-school take on headgear. Will we welcome the scrunchie back into our wardrobes? Maybe. Will we wear it with a half-up-half-down ballerina bun? Not as likely. But, we certainly have never been more pleasantly surprised to find one of our current favorite fashion brands bringing back an old faithful.
