Makeout-Proof Hair & Makeup

Every year, without fail, the holidays spur a plethora of hookups. And, why wouldn’t they? The season is magical enough, but when you add some booze, a few romantically lit parties, and mistletoe into the mix, it’s bound to happen. But, while we’re all for a steamy makeout session, we’re not exactly crazy about the aftermath.
Some people look hot post-hookup — guys, you have it easy — but there’s nothing sexy about smeared makeup and not-so-artfully disheveled tresses, which can take you from "hot" to "hot mess." So, what’s our primary goal? Well, it’s simple: We want to look just as fabulous after as we did before. For this, we turned to the experts.

Smudge-Proof Lips
Achieving a pout that will last through a lengthy lip-lock starts with prepping the lips for color. “Since most smudge-proof lip colors bond with bare lips, meaning no lip balm or conditioner, making sure your lips are moisturized and chap-free is the key,” said Liu.

Her must-have product for creating the perfect canvas is Murad’s Rapid Collagen Infusion for Lips (out January 2015), which she swears leaves lips incredibly moisturized with zero stickiness. “Leave it on for a few minutes, lightly blot off the excess, and then apply color,” she says. Liu’s favorite long-lasting lippie is Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Rouge Waterproof Liquid Lip Color because of its stunning color payoff and ability to build. “Let the color set for a minute or so before applying the gloss that comes with it to seal the deal,” said Liu.

Smear-Free Eye Makeup
Is there anything less appealing than mascara and shadow smudged all over your face? We think not. To avoid this cosmetics snafu, Liu suggests skipping the heavy eye cream and opting for a lightweight gel instead — like Fresh’s Lotus Eye Gel, which is moisturizing but not oily. Oily creams don't give eye products a chance to bond to your skin, which means they'll slide off as the night progresses.

To prep eyes for any shadow or liner, Liu likes to use a shadow base such as MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot, to give the makeup something to adhere to. “The slightly tacky texture of the base will help grab onto the makeup and keep it from smearing, moving, and fading,” she said. For the finishing touch, Liu advises using waterproof mascara like L’Oréal’s Voluminous False Fiber Lashes to combat smudging. “Apply one layer, brush it out with a comb brush to ensure zero clumping, then add another layer for extra sexiness,” she said. We’re always down for extra sexiness.

Foolproof Face Base
To assure that your base makeup has maximum longevity, using a primer first is essential. According to Liu, “the trick is to apply a thin layer and make sure it has a few minutes to set before applying foundation over it.” Liu is a fan of the Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hour Perfecting Primer, which has a waterproof, mattifying formula that helps to keep foundation in place. To set everything, dust a light veil of powder like Laura Mercier’s Loose Setting Powder to prolong the wear.

Blush That Won't Budge
When it comes to cheek color, you want to keep things as natural as possible — you'll be flushed enough after all that groping. Cream blush delivers a gorgeous glow, but tends to smear more easily. To combat this, Liu says to follow it up with a powder blush in a similar color to set and hold it in place. Her picks are Stila Convertible Colors and Chanel Powder Blush.

Pinned-Back Hair
When it comes to achieving fail-safe makeout hair, Castillo recommends keeping your locks both simple and touchable. To keep strands in place, he suggests using pretty pins — like these from Free People — and doubling them up to create cool shapes and designs.

Sexy, Cascading Locks
Castillo, on the other hand, suggests wearing hair down — because nothing is hotter than someone's fingers running wild through your mane — and applying a dollop of shine serum such as Aesop’s Shine Lightweight Hydrating Oil. Finish by adding Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray for extra style and just a bit of grit.

A No-Fuss Updo
If wearing your hair down just isn’t for you, Castillo suggests trying a romantic updo, such as a classic top knot or a side-swept fishtail braid. To hold the style, Castillo likes to use Joico’s volumizing finishing spray.
