This Is Our Jam: jj, “Pressure Is A Privilege”

Since you guys love our playlists so much, we thought it'd be fun to provide you with a daily little hit of music. We'd love to introduce our new once-a-day, every-day column by music writer Nathan Reese to help keep you up to speed on our favorite songs. Enjoy!

The enigmatic Swedish pop duo
jj
released their free mixtape Kills last year on Christmas Eve. What could have been a failed union of Ibiza techno, Enya vocals, and club bangers has turned out to be one of the best hip-hop records of the year. On “Pressure is a Privilege” the duo leaves Dr. Dre’s “Under Pressure (feat. Jay-Z)” largely untouched, but adds a soaring chorus that borrows from Drake and drenches the song with strings and synths. The result improves the original and somehow makes Dr. Dre feel relevant and forward thinking—a near miracle in 2011.
