Mctega Designers Take Their Rocky-Star Vibe From Jewelry To Clothing

Clearly it was Mctega's collection—and perhaps their lack of sleep—that conjured Kafka's Metamorphosis. Fabricated from fine Italian silks, translucent lamés, and studded with handmade gem clusters, the new clothing line signaled the evolution of Kristina Ortega and Sarah McLellan's previous jewelry works in resin. "We used princess seams to join the plastics with the fabrics, creating rudimentary facets that play with the idea of the way gems are formed," says Ortega. "This line essentially states our thesis." While limited resources kept the L.A.-based designers, who met while interning at Rodarte, from presenting at Fashion Week, the duo arrived to NYC early this week to introduce their new work to prospective buyers and editors. "It's at once terrifying and incredibly exciting. We've basically had to annoy people until they see us!"
