How Black Beauty Has Changed Over 100 Years

When Cut Video documented 100 years of beauty last month, we thought it was one of the more fascinating breakdowns of changing makeup and hair trends we've seen. Still, we couldn't help but notice that it excluded a whole lot of ladies. Namely, women of African descent, whose more textured hair doesn't necessarily allow them to rock the majority of the hairstyles that were shown, many of which call for straighter strands.

That's why, when the site released a new video documenting Black hair and makeup over the past century, a round of applause and resounding "amens" were heard 'round the R29 office. The fact that a natural-haired model shows off and represents the looks just makes it that much better — helping demonstrate to the uninformed that African-American hair is not only beautiful, but extremely versatile. (The site even did a side-by-side, contrasting the original video with the Black beauty one.)

How has Black beauty changed since 1910? Billie Holiday-esque bold lips and an updo decorated with flowers was the go-to look of the '40s, while the '70s called for big 'fros and natural makeup. The '90s gave us the realness of Janet Jackson's Poetic Justice braids, but our favorite look may just be today's, in which women embrace their textured tresses in all their glory.
