This is not news, but it astonishes us every time we hear it: There are currently no women hosting late-night TV shows. The folks at Vulture feel the same way. After learning that Amy Schumer had actually turned down The Daily Show, the site decided to determine whether this dearth of ladies behind desks post-Chelsea Lately was due to a lack of interest. Maybe these women are just leaning out in that particular time slot? So, they interviewed 37 famous female comedians to find out.
Some of the bigger names on their list, including Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey, and Ellie Kemper were very firmly in the no column.
"A woman should have one, for sure," Fey said. "But so much of the dynamic of shows like that is like, 'I'm a young actress,' and if you don't want to fuck that young actress, then why are you talking to her?"
But out of that 37, 26 said a resounding yes, with a few others adding that they'd like to if the circumstances of their life or career were different. From veterans like Margaret Cho to fresh faces like Sara Benincasa, they were all game for this hypothetical job offer.
What's also interesting is how many of them wanted to change up the format, involving the audience more in the interviews or going more in-depth, Barbara Walters-style. All of which tells us it's definitely time for networks to get their heads out of their antiquated bums and make one of these shows happen, pronto.
