Our New Favorite Hairstyle: The Bunny Tail

Usually, the beauty looks that come marching down the runway on stone-faced models are either completely underwhelming or totally bonkers. Looks that we would never wear in real life, or that we've seen a billion times before. But every now and then, something pops up that is both interesting and actually attainable. This season, it appears to be what we're calling the Bunny Tail (™). This hybrid bun and ponytail style has already popped up three times in various iterations on the runways — and it's only day two of NYFW. The textured renditions at Marissa Webb and Creatures of the Wind were chic, but our favorite example of this burgeoning trend was the stylized 'do at Nicholas K. Celebrity stylist Giannandrea, who created the style, calls it "The Back Knot" — but we think Bunny Tail is much more appropriate for this whimsical look. "I wanted to create a new, fresh look for the hair to harmonize with the urban traveler lifestyle that was showcased in the collection," he says. Giannandrea was inspired by the topknot worn by ancient Japanese samurai (traditionally called chonmage), but instead of on top of the head, he kept the looped-through knot at the back to allow the emphasis to remain on the clothes. To create the look, Giannandrea started on slightly damp hair and created a center-part. Then, he worked Macadamia's Professional Foaming Volumizer through the hair, from roots to ends, and blowdried with a diffuser and a paddle brush. For a sleek effect, he then flat-ironed each model's strands after spritzing a little Macadamia Professional Nourishing Moisture Oil Spray. Next, he created a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, securing it in place with a hair elastic and pins. Lastly, he made a loose loop with a section of the hair using another elastic, tied a small section of what was remaining around the elastic, and left the rest out in a tail-like fashion. Clearly this is a style that only works on longer strands — Giannandrea did use extensions — however, we can see it looking great on curly- and wavy-haired girls too. Just skip the flat-ironing, and embrace a textured bunny tail. We love a happy marriage of classic hairstyles, especially when it results in a punny trend name.
