Madonna’s Etsy Obsession Is Now An Art-World Trend

"Go hard or go home" intones Nicki Minaj in her guest verse on Madonna's new single, "Bitch I'm Madonna." It's a mantra that permeates Madge's persona, from her music to her Instagram handle, where she's revealed an affinity for the work of equally #unapologetic Etsy sensation Molly Wilt. (Username: @analprobehearts; bio: "All are for sale unless you're a douchebag.") It turns out that badass embroidery is more than just a fleeting fancy for the Queen of Pop — it's a phenomenon that's gaining traction in the art world, as well. Artist Zoë Buckman's series Every Curve employs the grandma-tastic technique to feminist effect, inscribing vintage lingerie with Tupac and Biggie lyrics. "The lingerie becomes an entirely new product," says Tze Chun, founder of Uprise Art, the gallery behind a special exhibition at NYC's Norwood in which Buckman's To Create One is on display. "[It's] no longer gentle and sweet, but radical and threatening, pierced by the needle, and humorously inviting you to ask more."
