Harry Styles Reads Bukowski Onstage, Questions Existence

Harry Styles is a member of a boy band. As such, many believe him to be superficial, egotistical, and perhaps even a little dim. These judgements are unfair. Just because he sings lyrics like "Everytime we touch / I'm all shook up / You make me wanna sigh / How deep is your love? / God only knows, baby," doesn't mean he's incapable of philosophical thought.

Take, for example, his dabbling in the poetry of Charles Bukowski. At a One Direction concert on Thursday night in Boston, Styles took a break from his cooing to sit and really think about what it all means. Mid-performance, he opened up Bukowski's You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense, and took a moment for himself — some Harry time. In this moment, Styles is questioning his own fame, perhaps even his own existence. For a minute or two, he finds solidarity in Bukowski's musings: "I am a series of small victories and large defeats and I am as amazed as any other that I have gotten from there to here without committing murder or being murdered; without having ended up in the
madhouse." This calm, of course, comes before he inevitably becomes a new viral meme — a fate this brooding teen cannot escape. (Seventeen)
