Following John Galliano's racist and anti-Semitic rant in a Parisian café in 2011, the designer has been slowly, but surely, making moves in an attempt to get back into the fashion world's good graces. After being relatively unsuccessful in reviving his status in that scene, though, the designer appears to be using the beauty industry as his "back door," so to speak. WWD reported today that Galliano has been consulting under the radar for L'Etoile, a massive chain of Russian beauty stores.
While Galliano's role has been confirmed by both the designer's spokesperson and L'Etoile (the brand has a faux newspaper headline up on its website declaring "John Is Back!"), details as to what, exactly, he is up to will apparently be released in the coming days. Whatever John has in the works, it's likely to be as big as his personality: L'Etoile is the largest beauty chain in Russia, with more than 750 stores that carry more than 150 prestige labels.
As WWD points out, Galliano is no stranger to this particular space. He created his own namesake fragrance years back and held a major role in beauty dealings in his 15-year stint as Dior's creative director. However, it has yet to be seen how the public will respond to the designer's latest project. Despite his obvious talent, the memory of Galliano's searing comments may render his attempts at redemption futile.
